Have You or a Loved Ones Developed a Serious Illness Due to Toxic Drinking Water at Camp Lejeune?

Camp Lejeune Justice Act

Camp Lejeune is a United States military base in North Carolina that was contaminated with toxic chemicals for several decades, starting in the 1950s. These chemicals, including trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), seeped into the base’s drinking water, exposing thousands of military personnel, their families, and civilian employees to serious health risks. Efforts to get compensation for victims of the contamination at Camp Lejeune have been ongoing for several years. In 2012, the Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act brought a welcome reprieve for suffering residents through the provision of healthcare to those affected by the contamination. A larger settlement was reached between the government and victims of the contamination in 2017, providing up to $2.2 billion in compensation for medical claims related to the exposure to toxic chemicals at Camp Lejeune. The settlement covered more than 70 different health conditions, including various types of cancer, liver damage, and neurological disorders. While the process of getting compensation for victims of the contamination at Camp Lejeune has been challenging, the settlement represents a significant step towards acknowledging the harm caused by the contamination and providing support to those who have been impacted.

Camp Lejeune and the Surrounding Area

In 1982, testing revealed that three separate water distribution systems that supplied water to Camp Lejeune were highly contaminated with toxic chemicals. Surrounding areas including Hadnot Point, Tarawa Terrace, and Holcomb Boulevard were also affected by the carcinogens.

Investigations revealed that between August 1953 and December 1987, as many as one million service members, civilians, and their families who lived and worked near Camp Lejeune were exposed to toxic chemicals in polluted drinking water.
